As a coach who’s mentored thousands of kids throughout my career, I’ve seen one thing far too often—young athletes losing their confidence because of the very game they’re playing. I’ve spent decades in this game, and I’m passionate about preventing kids from losing hope, motivation, and joy in the sport they love.
It’s heartbreaking to watch young players, full of potential, get discouraged by experiences that should be helping them grow. I’m here not just to point out the problems but to offer solutions for parents and players alike. I want to help you identify those confidence-killing situations, avoid them, and provide an alternative—a program designed to build confidence, ignite passion for the game, improve skills, and sustain progress so that young athletes can reach their dreams.
“Basketball is more than a game—it’s a tool to build confidence, ignite passion, and prepare young athletes for life’s challenges.”
I’ve been in the game a long time. I played college ball at the University of Washington, helped lead my team to the Sweet 16, and now, both of my kids play college basketball on full scholarships. Seeing them succeed, after going through the same struggles so many young players face, is a dream come true. But it wasn’t by accident—they were given space to explore, grow, and define who they wanted to be without limitations being placed on them too early.
One of the biggest mistakes I see in youth sports is when kids are put into rigid roles far too early. I’ve seen coaches tell an 8-year-old, “You’re a two-guard. Stand in the corner.” I’m here to tell you that no one should define who your child is before they’ve had the chance to explore their own potential.
The Importance of Proper Development
In many cases, we put kids in competitive environments before they even understand how to play. Then they fail, get yelled at by a coach, and their confidence takes a hit. The real tragedy? Those moments could have been teaching opportunities. Coaches should be guiding young athletes, showing them how to grow from mistakes rather than tearing them down. When a child is constantly placed in situations where they feel they’re falling short, they’re less likely to enjoy the game and, ultimately, less likely to succeed.
At Watts Basketball, we run an academy where we emphasize growth, not just competition. We compete in tournaments, but every moment is used as a teaching opportunity. We create an environment where players get excited about improving. Rather than getting frustrated when they make mistakes, we push them to get determined. Didn’t nail that move? Let’s practice it. Then we’ll put you back in that situation and watch you succeed. Over time, kids gain confidence, not just as players, but as people.
Basketball is about more than just wins and losses. It’s a tool to help young athletes become better people, preparing them for the challenges life will throw their way. If you’re looking for a program that does more than teach basketball skills—one that builds character and confidence—then Watts Academy is for you.
Get in the gym with us…
I didn’t find this type of program for my kids, so I created it for yours. At Watts Academy, we’re intentional about how much preparation we do versus how much competition we face. Being competitive isn’t just about the number of games you play—it’s about how well you prepare for those games. It’s about learning from failure, putting in the work, and constantly improving.
