This episode is about a monumental occasion for the College Prospects podcast as I sit down to share a new chapter in my son’s college basketball journey. It’s game day—the official start of his collegiate career. As I sit here in Seattle, a mere five hours away from Pullman, Washington, where my son is attending school, I can’t help but reflect on the journey that has brought us to this moment.
The path to this day has been paved with hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. While I may sometimes shy away from the cliché of the adversity narrative, there’s no denying that overcoming challenges is an integral part of any journey towards success, especially in the fiercely competitive world of college athletics.
Today serves as a moment of reflection—a time to acknowledge the hurdles we’ve overcome and the sacrifices we’ve made to reach this point. From the early days of organized basketball to navigating the intricate web of high school and AAU competition, every step has shaped my son’s journey.
I vividly recall conversations from years past, where well-meaning individuals questioned our approach, urging us to dive headfirst into the competitive youth basketball scene. Yet, I remained steadfast in my belief that true passion and commitment cannot be rushed or forced. I wanted my son to cultivate a love for the game organically, to develop a strong work ethic rooted in genuine passion rather than external pressures.
Throughout high school, he faced setbacks, from debilitating injuries to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But through it all, he remained resilient, refusing to let obstacles derail his dreams. I watched with pride as he navigated the highs and lows of his basketball journey, emerging stronger and more determined each time.
As we embark on this new chapter at Washington State University, I am filled with optimism and excitement. While challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, I have faith in my son’s abilities and the support system that surrounds him. From the coaching staff to his teammates, I believe he is in good hands.
But beyond the wins and losses on the court, I am most proud of the young man my son has become. His journey has taught him valuable lessons in perseverance, resilience, and the importance of staying true to oneself amidst adversity.
As I prepare to make the journey to Pullman to cheer him on from the stands, I am reminded of the importance of family. This journey has been a collective effort, with each member of our family playing a vital role in supporting and encouraging one another.
In closing, I want to express my gratitude to all those who have been a part of this journey—the coaches, teammates, and supporters who have helped shape my son’s path. And to those who may be embarking on a similar journey, I offer these words of encouragement:
