In the midst of my recovery and recent short retreat, I came up with a way to celebrate my birthday, and help kids in need at the same time. I’ve been mulling over this idea about rallying pledges to support to raise funds for scholars, specifically aiming to assist 300 underprivileged youth alongside myself and nine of my closest friends.
This Saturday, April 27th, we’re gathering a few friends to celebrate my belated birthday – only about ten days behind schedule, but hey, that’s par for the course lately given the way my brain’s been operating due to my recent stroke. But beyond the festivities, there’s a deeper mission at play here. You see, my family has weathered its fair share of financial and health-related storms, which has inevitably put a strain on our business.
However, instead of opting for the traditional crowdfunding route, I’ve found solace in the idea of rolling up my sleeves, hitting the gym, and working directly with youth to cultivate bright futures.
Through the Watts Foundation, we’re in the process of developing a scholarship program aimed at sponsoring over 300 youngsters. It’s not just about supporting these kids, but it’s also about my family, and helping us get back on our feet. It’s a win-win situation, if you ask me. With the backing of myself, my son, my daughter and six other dedicated friends who will be participating as shooters, we’ve been out there, pounding the pavement, collecting pledges.
Just the other day, over lunch in Chinatown, a parent shared with me the challenges their child had faced in high school. It’s stories like these that fuel our determination to make a difference. Every connection made, every mentorship offered – it all adds up to a brighter future for these kids.
So here’s the deal: whether you’re feeling generous enough to pledge a dollar, two, five, or even ten – every bit counts. Whether you’re committing to a per-shot donation or a general contribution, rest assured that nearly 90% of every dollar will go directly towards supporting these deserving youngsters. We’re also investing in administrative support to ensure the sustainability of our efforts.
We are immensely grateful for any support you can offer, and I promise you, the impact will be felt not only by us but by the kids in our community too. As I reflect on my father’s legacy in community service for over fifty years, I can’t help but feel a sense of duty to carry on his work. And with the support of our community, I’m confident that together, we can make a lasting impact.
So, here’s to being the best versions of ourselves for the betterment of others. Let’s fill that void in our community and pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. Cheers to making a difference, one shot at a time.
Peace, Love, and Basketball
