Level Up: Basketball Skill Development Drills for Starters

Marksmanship drill

A reliable jump shot is arguably the most potent offensive weapon a player can equip in one’s repertoire, making the marksmanship drill a necessity in the path of basketball skill development. As its name implies, it’s about hoisting up shots from beyond the arc and the perimeter area. This can come in the form of off-the-dribble pull-ups or even catch and shoot, in case you have a training partner.

When conducting this drill, make it a point to drain 10 to 15 shots, which could be increased over time. Start off from the perimeter area at one baseline before covering every shooting spot towards another baseline. Then, proceed to practice from three-point range, shooting from the corner pockets, elbows, and top of the key. End the drill at the freethrow line.

Stationary Ball Handling Drill

Are you aiming to be as good of a ball controller as Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry? Then the first step towards that goal is the stationary ball handling drill.

This basketball skill development routine focuses on executing 10 to 15 repetitions of each ball handling move. Begin with finger touches before doing body circles around the head and waist. Proceed with the dribbling exercises, starting off with low pound dribbles followed by high ones for each hand. After that, practice the basic crossovers, between-the-legs combinations then cap it up off with the behind-the-back techniques.

Passing drill

This basketball skill development routine is best conducted with a partner, but a wall can more than make up as a training companion in the absence of an assistant.

To run this drill, be prepared to make 10 to 15 repetitions of each passing technique. Start off with the easy bounce pass. Follow it up with the chest pass then the over-the-head pass before wrapping it up with one-handed dishes for each hand.

Develop your skills in the most effective way!

Maximum Effort

Competition on the court is as stiff as it gets, so it is of paramount importance to train hard and put a premium on the fundamental skills to have a leg up on the playing field. So, take the time to work on these basketball skill development drills and become the best hooper that you can be!
